Buff Selection Guide
When used with compounds, buffs can do
everything from removing deep scratches to
imparting a high luster. Remember, each
buff must be reserved for use with just one
compound to avoid mixtures, which yield
unpredictable finishes.
· Loose Muslin Buffs
Feature layers
joined only at arbor hole. Offer soft action
and follow contours. Use with rouge for
final polishing. Have high linen content,
which provides longer buff life compared
to inexpensive competitive products.
· Stitched Muslin Buffs
Have multiple
concentric circles of stitching for firmer
action. Use with cutting compounds.
· Razor-Edge Muslin Buffs
Ideal for
reaching areas conventional buffs can't.
· Coarse-Weave Muslin
Holds com-
pounds very well.
· Fine-Weave Muslin
Holds com-
pounds very well and has long life span.
· Combed Edges
Hold compounds well.
Require no break-in period.
· Treatments
Chemical treatments make
buffs stiffer and provide better compound
retention. Use with cutting compounds on
hard metals.
· Centers
Made of stitched leather or
lead. Can also be shellac-hardened. For
use on tapered spindles or arbors.
· Unique Materials
Flannel, chamois,
cotton string and felt are used to produce
buffs with different characteristics.
